Information on Smart myTV

Sunday, August 26th, 2007

I was over at SM Mall of Asia yesterday and I passed by the Smart myTV promotion booth. I have always been intrigued by this myTV thing; I hear stories of people watching television from their phones in Japan. Also, I always find myself in situations where I think this – “Man, I sure could use a television now.” Usually that happens when I’m waiting in my car, waiting in a lounge of some place, or waiting in a waiting area. If you have a girlfriend, you’d understand why I constantly find myself waiting.

Naturally, an invention like Smart myTV would interest me. I went over to the booth and checked the small N92 held by the promo girl. That’s right, even before I checked the promo girl herself, who by the way was hot. It was showing cartoons from the Cartoon Network. First thought that came to my mind was wow, a cable channel. I always thought tv-phones would get reception the same way regular tv sets do. Obviously, I was wrong.

To get Smart myTV you’d need a myTV capable handset. These are: Nokia N92, Nokia N77 and the Samsung P930. These are what they call Digital Video Broadcast – Handheld (DVBH) cellphones. Smart myTV is a service from a company called 360media; I don’t know much about them. Current coverage includes Metro Manila, including NLEX & SLEX – so you can watch in your car, Tagaytay, Cebu and Davao. There are currently 9 channels and these are: Cartoon Network, Entertainment Central (etc), Jack TV, Pinoy Box Office, MTV, CNN, National Geographic Channel, The History Channel and a Sports Channel which includes shows from Basketball TV, Solar Sports and the PBA. Subscription is Php 488 per 30 days and is available for postpaid and prepaid subscribers.

Let me end this post with an irony. I’m a Globe user. I might never have first hand experience with myTV. Please post a comment if you have stories. I know Globe will have a similar service, I’ll post about that too – with first hand experience.

On borrowing and lending money

Appropriate Filipino title: Bakit kung sino pa ang inuutangan, siya pa ang nahihiya?

I haven’t really been telling much stories lately, but now I find myself in the mood again. So, I’ll go back to the most recent, standout incident I experienced, and realized a thing or two from; it happened almost a month ago. Take note, if I had the choice, the title of this post would be that-which-is-italicized before this paragraph but, I find myself obsessing once more.

The short story

Back in high school I had this sub-barkada of sorts. There were four of us, and we would get together maybe once a week even if each of us had a real “main” barkada. So there’s me, and the other three whom I’ll name as such: Pusher, Bang, and Ang ka-sapakan ni Flores. Anyway, Pusher and I went to the same college so there’s no doubt we inevitably saw more of each other. Bang was a keeper friend, he is one of those who is hard to forget, so the regular get together was practiced. Ang ka-sapakan ni Flores simply disappeared.

10 years has passed since high school. The only thing I know of Ang ka-sapakan ni Flores is that he is already a father. Two, maybe three children, married, I’m not even sure. There were no text messages sent, no pager messages (as in Beeper 150) sent, no calls made, none which suggests that there is still an existing friendship between us.

One day I woke up to a very funny sentence. “Mark, may tumawag sa’yo kaso hindi ko alam kung sino.” Funny, Ate Adelfa. Instead of losing it, I just let it go. But, I was curious as hell as to who called; caller ID was not much help either. An hour later I answered the phone and to my surprise it was Ang ka-sapakan ni Flores.

Uy, pare! Kamusta ka na!?

Mark, aaminin at di-diretsuhin ko na sa’yo kung bakit ako napatawag. Kailangan ko ng tulong mo pare.

It turns out, Ang ka-sapakan ni Flores needs some rent money. He has kids who go to school so tuition comes first. He is renting a small house, and if he was not able to produce Php 8,000 by 5:00 p.m. (it was already 4:20 when the call took place), they would have no house to go home to. I felt sorry. In fact, I felt so sorry and guilty. Suddenly I was responsible for the welfare of a family. It was a choice I had to make, and I had to make it fast.

On borrowing and lending money

Let’s just say that what happened after was not something I was proud of. To add to that, there are of course two sides to my story above – one where we say “Ang kapal naman ni Ang ka-sapakan ni Flores,” and another where we say “Naiintindihan ko siya, ganyan talaga ‘pag desperado.” Either way, why is it that he who is the supposed lender is always the one who is nahihiya (ashamed)?

Prior to this incident I found myself on the opposite end of the scenario. I had just came from a small inuman and when I left to pay someone I owed, I found myself short in cash, without any open BPI atm’s nationwide. I called back my friend to borrow a thousand. He said he had none, even if I sounded like it was a matter of life and death. Bewildered, I received a call from the same person. He had called to say he just found some money in his house. It was as if my supposed misfortune was in his hands. This person of course, is one of my closer friends. I’ll do the same to him in an instant.

Why do we suddenly lose balls to tell the truth? That we always end up making a lame excuse why we couldn’t lend money. Is it because the designated inuutangan is always expected to have money? And saying something like “I don’t have money” is like admitting defeat? Is it because we don’t want to let our friends down? Or is it because making up something absurd is our own small revenge to he-who-needs-money, that deep inside we really hate being asked for money, that we end up unknowingly wanting to cause more problems for he-who-needs-money.

Kjwan and Vina Morales wins IKON ASEAN grand finals

From Kjwan guitarist, Jorel Corpus’ Multiply site, an entry entitled “AHHH…,” which clearly confirms Kjwan has won the IKON grand finals held in Kuala Lumpur. I think they also passed by Singapore (after besting Philippine eliminations) for another IKON gig two weeks before the grand finals. Here‘s the full story from GMA’s site. Here‘s a blog entry of someone from Singapore who was awed by their performance. Here are some photos from the Philippine finals taken by Mari Arquiza.

I like the direction Kjwan is taking with their career. So much passion, great team effort, independent. I would like to personally extend my congratulations to the band. I’ve crossed paths with some of them at one time or another from gigs or what-have-yous in the band scene, and I know they mean business when it comes to music. That, and the fact that Vina Morales has a lesser chance of stumbling upon this blog entry. Kjwan is hosting a victory party on August 29 over at Capone’s Makati. Lastly, Jorel has lost a lot of weight.

Jet Li for San Miguel Beer

Monday, August 13th, 2007

Why?

I first saw the billboard along C5 last week, I figured there had to be a television counterpart. I finally saw the commercial today. It was fine I guess, I just don’t understand why they got Jet Li. It is also already in YouTube. I’m not embedding the video here, I don’t do that, just click on the link.

“San Miguel beer please!” “Great move.” “Great beer.” And that’s the whole dialogue. Manny Pacquiao didn’t even say a word. The comments in YouTube are so judgmental, and funny. Check it out. Here I go again with my blog fillers. Well, I’m monetizing now, I need as much traffic as I can get.

Blog fillers

Sunday, August 12th, 2007

One thing I experience on a regular basis is to run out of blog topics. Professional bloggers, with my amazement, blog everyday. Sometimes, they post more than once in a day. If only I could, but in all honesty, I constantly find myself at a loss for topics. And to think this blog is not even concentrated on a niche. I hate it when I can’t blog about anything interesting but I do something, to compensate for potential traffic loss. I post blog fillers.

What are blog fillers?

A blog filler is something I might have completely made up. It can also be called a ghost post. What I do is I blog about something in the past or something not really worthy of the front page. Why? Because blogs are online archives. They layout a history (related or otherwise) of the blogger. Sometimes I write a reminder on my phone to write about an event, but due to some circumstances, I completely forget about the post or sometimes even I might have no access to a computer for a couple of days (yes, it happens). I just go ahead and post about something that is already done, of course with a hint of past tense, and pray that the search engines might still pick them up. Or, I post about something out of the ordinary, about anything I feel someone might be searching for.

This is the opposite of forecasting an event – posting about an event in the future hoping that an early post will yield a top position in search engines. My blog is not really a regularly-read blog. I realized that through my statistics direct visits and repeat visits. Although I’m still hoping this blog becomes a household name someday, at least now I have multiple traffic sources which in turn might convert a stumbler into a loyal reader.

Time to monetize

Saturday, August 11th, 2007

I just checked my statistics, 1,016 visits today for Thoughts In Binary. If you’ve been following my monthly statistics posts (I doubt that), I always mentioned I’ll only place ads in this blog after I break the 1,000 visits per day mark. I had a previous record of 962 visits in July, that was not even good enough (for me) to place ads. I know it sounds weird and it really does not make such a big difference (962 visits as to 1,016) but a promise (to myself) is a promise. And, it works well for my traffic-building discipline.

A small confession first, I’ve been running AdSense in my gallery since April. It was only an experiment, I haven’t really optimized it and I’m just earning close to nothing. Today I added link ad units in the sidebar and banners in single post views. I’m still running the default WordPress theme, I’m not sure how ads will perform under this theme so I might again eat my words and finally change themes – one that is more optimized for displaying ads.

I will give a detailed report on my blog’s monthly earnings, like my monthly statistics. Watch out for my first post on blog earnings on September 2. Blog statistics are reserved for 1st of the month posts and earning on 2nd day of every month.

The First Philippine International Motor Show

Saturday, August 11th, 2007

There’s another a new car show in town. The 1st Philippine International Motor Show; keyword, “international.” It is organized by the Chamber of Automotive Manufacturers of the Philippines Inc. (CAMPI) and started last August 9, until the 12th at the The World Trade Center. The event which carries the theme “Shifting to Higher Gear,” will unveil the latest car models from the best brands in the country. It is also presented by Shell Philippines, and will showcase the unity of the Philippine automotive industry.

I heard of this show from my kumpare, Eric. I was not aware of it until later today. I searched for some information, then I also found this site of the organizers. Apparently, it is an “international” show, so it is one that acts as a venue to showcase the latest innovations from manufacturers, concept cars, weird inventions, etc. It’s not really my kind of show, I go more for one-of-a-kind custom creations, but I might drop by tomorrow. Word is hot on the latest Mitsubishi Evolution or “EVO.”

Josh Hartnett is in the Philippines

Wednesday, August 8th, 2007

That’s right. Mega-papable Hollywood hunk, star of films such as Pearl Harbor and Black Hawk Down, is right here in the Philippines. I’m not gay and I’m just posting this because I’m really running out of blog topics. He is filming part of the movie “I Come With Rain” in the gold-mining area of Mt. Diwalwal, Compostella Valley in Davao.

I think he is the only Hollywood actor in the crew, I know there are Japanese and Korean actors as well. I also heard he walks around escorted by an infantry batallion. There are more facts from this site.

Man, how hardcore would it be if Josh was kidnapped by rebels? That would really put us on the map. On another note, my friend Bea – Crush ng bayan, just texted me and said she just met Quentin Tarantino. I wonder how, why and when…

Solar powered car made by La Salle students

Tuesday, August 7th, 2007

The Philippines’ first solar powered car will be open for public viewing tomorrow at the De La Salle University campus. The car will also participate in an international competition featuring cars with alternative means of power. I was not able to catch that much information from the news, all I know is that the finished car was not shown on television. It looks similar though to the usual solar cars – the one that houses only one person inside a clear glass bubble. The car from what I heard is also supported by regular car batteries for extra power. Props to DLSU and it’s engineering students.

Thoughts In Binary July 2007 statistics

Wednesday, August 1st, 2007

Here goes my first of the month statistics reporting. I started this in June where I gave a detailed report of my blog’s May traffic. July’s traffic was very good, it was my best so far. So up to now the only month where I experienced a decline in traffic is in June; it’s because I got a very high spike in May and it mellowed down after some posts that were about events expired. Other than that, my blog has experienced traffic growth every month since it’s conception in October 2006. It may be a slow climb, but my goal is simple – increase traffic every month, no matter how small.

Statistics

I had a total of 14,444 unique visitors in July, surpassing my 12,852 in May. 20,085 visits, 52,341 page views at 2.74 GB bandwidth. I averaged 640.97 visits per day with a record of 962 visits (best ever) on July 25. I had a total of 6,180 referrals from Google, 5,634 from Google Images and 725 from Yahoo!

Thoughts

The increase in traffic is due to a couple of forecast-posts – posts that are about events that will happen in the future. Most of these posts are about the Philippines. I’m dying to monetize this blog, but like I promised to myself, I will not add ads until I reach 1,000 visits in a day. You might think it’s insane putting my traffic to waste but this way I am disciplining myself on traffic building alone. After all, traffic is still the biggest factor in monetization. A change that I did last month was to care less about Search Engine positions and optimizing individual posts. There came a time when I knew exactly what rank my posts were on a daily basis. It gave a headache especially when my rank dropped or my posts were missing. Now, I just decided to mind my own business and just post away. But, I make it a point to post smartly, e.g. I always include posts that have potential for landing searches.
