And now PayPal Philippines

Receive payments via PayPal in the Philippines

Oooh, this is a breakthrough week for Philippine Internet indeed. First, the Western Union option for Google AdSense publishers, and now PayPal! For the longest time now, Filipino users were barred from using the ever-so-important e-commerce tool PayPal. Bloggers were ecstatic when PayPal added the Philippines in their list of supported countries some 11 months ago – but back then we only had the ability to send money and not receive payments. Now it is confirmed. PayPal registrations coming from the Philippines (I.P. address) have the option of receiving payments, and withdrawing by, (1) transferring the money from PayPal to a U.S. bank account and (2) withdraw to a credit, debit or prepaid card.

Wait, we still cannot transfer the money to a local bank or receive a check from PayPal. But that’s a start. First heard from Mike Abundo. Now I have to sort out first which Ad Networks pay via PayPal before I splurge on some e-bay shopping.

Quick Cash for Philippine AdSense publishers

Here’s one topic that will surely circulate the Philippine blogosphere in the next few days so might as well have a Thoughts In Binary take on it. Thanks to Rhodilee.com for catching my attention by linking to my Some dude stole and cashed my AdSense check! post – now I know linking to my blog is the faster way of getting my attention (over sending an email).

I’ve seen some posts on the issue but the question of “How much?” – referring to transaction fees – still remains unanswered. If it is $2 or more cheaper than the $24 DHL service then I’m taking it. I specifically said $2 because the nearest Western Union branch (outside the village) is a 5-kilometer round trip so I have to account for gas. Would be interesting to see the first posts on first hand experiences since payment is just around the corner.

My cheap Sony Ericsson P990i

How it came about

I just realized I can live without a laptop of my own, but, without a PDA, no. And, since I am still forbidden from reuniting with my self-destructing Palm Treo 600, I scouted for a new companion. I feel so helpless not being able to write my thoughts in binary. Blog topics, things to do, things to buy and sell, song ideas – these are just some of the things that randomly pop in my head, and, without a tool to remember them by, I’ve lost forever that-which-might-have-been-something-special.

Like I’ve said in my previous post, I was torn between Nokia’s E61i and this Sony Ericsson P990i. The E61i is the better smartphone but temptation is a bitch, and budget is tight. Currently, the E61i sells for around Php 20,000 brand new. The P990i, get ready for this, Php 13,000 only. Not bad for something that sold for Php 40,000 when in first came out. And, to add to my already uber cheapassness, I bought a used unit for Php 11,500. The unit is complete, still under warranty, has zero body scratches, and the only aesthetic blemish is some wear on the menu button.

My take on the Sony Ericsson P990i

Reviews of this unit are already abundantly scattered all over the internet. I’ll add here some of the more useful links that helped my decision, then I’ll add my personal take. PhilMUG.PH has one of the earliest threads discussing the P990i. Then you might as well view the longer thread discussing the Nokia E61i (113 pages). A thread on MaPa1ad entitled Goodbye Palm… Hello P990i is a good read. And, a nice, short video review at YouTube for the lazy reader.

I came from a very primitive Palm Treo 600 so all these new features are just perks. Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, a semi-decent camera (2-megapixel), video recording, 3G, 3D games, a high-resolution screen (240×320 pixels, 256K colors) – are just some of the things I’ll try to incorporate in my daily life. Wi-Fi on a phone for me is just something to brag about. Sites are just so cramped and are a pain to look at. The 2-megapixel camera is a welcome addition to take emergency precious moments – it also comes with a built in flash and auto-focus. The screen is really nice and crisp.

I used to be able to do everything in my Treo without ever using the stylus, I can’t seem to do that now – there are just some things that are unaccessible with the jog dial. The qwerty keypad is a little cramped, although the addition of a regular phone keypad means I can do one-hand texting once again. The phone’s responsiveness (programs, overall speed) could be better, it’s not really that buggy, and I know there is a new firmware upgrade for the unit (which I haven’t done). Battery life, well, I’ve yet to drain my first charge – I’m only 6 hours in and only an eighth taken from the battery meter. For now I have to say I’m a happy camper. I’ll probably follow-up on this post once I update the firmware.

I recommend this phone and here’s why

I spent the same amount for my Treo 600 some 2 years ago. With so much more, at this price, you can’t go wrong. The only difference between this and the other smartphones (with the same features, particularly the E61i) is the responsiveness – and it’s something you can learn to live with (adjust to). By the way, I also took some close-ups of the phone, click on the image below to view them.

Fall Out Boy Bastos

Saturday, September 22nd, 2007

Passers-by, proceed to the next paragraph

“…that even though I’ve just experienced that-which-could-have-been the biggest distraction to steer my thoughts clear of the matter, I am constantly bombarded with opportunistic windows to re-live the events as they happened, surprisingly, to me, without feeling compelled, but obliged.” These are my thoughts on the title. So gay.

A post-concert mini-review

The Fall Out Boy concert is finally over. I’ve had my ticket since early August; this blog on the other hand, has been instrumental (at least) in uniting Fall Out Boy would-be concert goers looking for details online – from my post entitled “Fall Out Boy set to visit Philippines.”

The Philippine leg is part of their Friends or Enemies World Tour – which I will now aptly dub “The Pete Wentz show.” Pete Wentz, Fall Out Boy bassist, star of his own scandal, rumored boyfriend of Ashlee Simpson, is in fact, Fall Out Boy.

Chicosci, as you might have already known, opened the show promptly at 8:00 p.m. I admire the fact that they were able to reverse chants of “Fall Out Boy! Fall Out Boy!” to “Chicosci! Chicosci!” Still, throughout their set I couldn’t help but think of only one thing – what could possibly be going through Pete Wentz’ mind seeing his every move mirrored by Calde (Chicosci’s bassist).

Pete Wentz is definitely the poster boy for today’s emo bass man – bass strumming, twirl-la-loos, one-side (hairdo), and hoodie (shirt).

At the end of their set, Mong Alcaraz (guitarist) figured it was the appropriate forum to wreck one of his guitars.

On to Fall Out Boy. Their set started at 9:15 p.m., after a short spiel by MTV VJ’s Anne Curtis, Sib, and another girl. They opened with the song Thriller – one of my favorites. Unfortunately, my attention was only half of that of a healthy man. Luckily, our seats was neither blocked by anyone in front nor close enough to merit the need to stand up – to avoid being labeled “kill joy.” Still, I couldn’t help but bob my head to their most energetic songs (which I knew) – I’ve been to more concerts where I knew less songs.

Some more thoughts and instances worthy of this blog: Pete Wentz literally fell smack on the floor on one of his antics – after which he proceeded to do some stage push ups (middle of a song). They covered Beat It by Michael Jackson, Green Day’s Basket Case and another song – Power of Love? Concerts of today are nothing compared to concerts of yesterday – take Rage Against the Machine for example – I would have never imagined seeing 10-year-olds accompanied by their parents back then. Patrick Stump is definitely the real talent in the band – he even does the solos and the harder guitar parts – which leads me to doubt more Joe Trohman’s real role in the band. Other than that, this is probably the only band not properly “fronted” by the frontman.

Among other things

I’m re-opening the gates of my hosting business – thanks to a new lease on life jump started by Vulgar “Oo, ang taba mo na!” Pulgar, and a load-less Dual Xeon Dempsey 3.0. I also almost nearly appeared on two more television shows this week – no thanks to boy sakitin (yours truly). Oh, I am contemplating on whether to buy a Nokia N61i – proclaimed must-have “it” phone of 2007, or a very tempting cheap-ass Sony Ericsson P990i (Php 13,500 brand new). And, lastly, Christian Bautista forgets his national anthem. Meanwhile, enjoy some Bianca King goodness.

I miss blogging

The past week-and-a-half has been one Hell of an experience. Worse than the times I lost someone close to me – knowing that back then, the overall misery was divided, and, the road to recovery was shared. This time, I am alone. The trail ends with me. And, although I am truly grateful that I am supported by all walks of life, I will only share what I would consider a victorious outcome with thee; I will never implicate any of you in harm’s way if the most-feared worst case scenario becomes.

With all that drama out of the way, I miss blogging. At the end of the day, I am but an internet marketer trying to make a living online. I have a business to run, so I might as well make some money from this misery. I could have simply chosen to continue blogging like nothing happened, but the truth is I owe a lot of people an explanation, including updates, interviews and what-have-yous.

The right to remain silent

It would be rude if people have the hardest time trying to get a hold of me while my online presence is strong – sites being regularly updated. At this point I can safely say that I am back online, but not in full force.

Rest assured, I will give an update when the time is right. I promise. I will post on this blog what I have imagined to be entitled “The story of Boy Bastos” the moment I am allowed to. Please do understand that it is in me and my family’s best interest that I practice my right to remain silent.

I apologize to those whom I might have ignored. Do know that I still do not have my old number and phone back. I have a temporary number but it would be insane to post it here. If you badly need to contact me please email me at mark.verzo[@]gmail.com.

To the blogging community, your support will not go unnoticed and unappreciated.

Thoughts In Binary August 2007 income

Sunday, September 2nd, 2007

This is the first of my planned monthly income reporting. From here on after, every 2nd of the month, I will give a detailed report of my blog’s income from the previous month. It will come after my blog’s statistics report, so you will have an idea of how traffic and income relates to each other. When I started this blog I said my goal was to earn from blogging. 3 more personal blogs and a near-dead blog network after, I’ve come to accept this blog more as a personal extension of my private life and weird thoughts. I am still an internet marketer by profession though, so you might still learn a thing or two from me from these posts. Like my traffic goal, my income goal is simple – increase income every month. It does not matter if I increase my income every month by a dollar, as long as I increase it monthly, I’m happy.

Income

Like I’ve said before, I will only start to place ads on this blog after I reach 1,000 daily visits. Luckily, that happened last August 9. Since then, I’ve only used Google AdSense and Amazon’s affiliate program. I earned a measly grand total of $20.51 from Google AdSense and $0.62 from Amazon. That’s a grand total of $21.13 for August. My, oh my, I’m on my way to becoming a dot com mogul.

Thoughts

For September I’m confident that my income will increase mainly because there are more days (monetization) in September – I only placed ads on the 9th of August. So ah, my work is done. Okay, let’s add a little more excitement here, after all, my blog’s traffic is 1/6th of John Chow’s so in theory I should be earning around $3,000 of John Chow’s $17,828.61. Now how to get that done will be the mystery of my blogging career. I will try to add as many monetization mediums to this blog but it’s already not looking good. This blog has already been unaccepted in TLA and yesasia.com. Har, har.

Thoughts In Binary August 2007 statistics

Saturday, September 1st, 2007

Here is yet another installation of my monthly statistics reporting. I started doing this last June 1, 2007, and I always make it clear that my only goal is to increase my traffic every month – I don’t have any specifics as to how much I want my traffic to increase, I just want it to increase every month. So far I have been successful at increasing my statistics monthly since October 2006, with the exception of the May-June turnaround. In August, my blog experienced yet again another record setting month (statistics-wise).

Statistics

I had a total of 19,813 unique visitors in August, a 37% increase from July’s 14,444. I received 27,863 visits and served 56,335 page views at 4.34 GB of bandwidth. I also experienced the most visits in a day since my blog was born – 1,042 visits on August 28. The most page views in August was on August 3 at 3,308 but my lifetime record still stands at 4,620 which happened on July 29. Thoughts In Binary received 11,112 referrals from Google and 913 from Yahoo!

Changes

I also started monetizing from this blog last August. I have always said that I will only place ads in this blog when I hit the 1,000 daily visits mark and that’s exactly what happened on August 9. Tomorrow I’ll post a short report on my blog’s income for August; there’s really nothing exciting about it, I am still trying to figure out what will work with this blog. I’ll also add that I have the same monetization goals as with my traffic goals – increase income every month with no specifics to how much. I really did not do much to increase my August traffic. In fact, I might have posted the least number of posts per month in August. I also stopped worrying too much about my search engine rankings. I used to check my rankings daily and take notes on the changes – it’s mind boggling. Now I worry less and yet I still experienced an increase. Might be my blog’s age catching up.
