Happy Thoughts In Binary Holidays

Merry Christmas, Happy New Year

Christmas rush. People, stop saying “It doesn’t feel like Christmas” or “I don’t feel Christmas yet.” It’s cold, traffic is at it’s worst, you don’t have money to shop yet you are still able to buy gifts for everyone, you’ve been to at least one Christmas party, you’ve been itching to buy your “gift for oneself,” if you don’t have someone – you’ve been feeling your loneliest this year (and bitching about it), if you have someone – you’re still undecided on what to give him or her, you’ve received at least one gift that was meant for someone else but forwarded to you, you’ve gained some holiday weight, you’ve been to at least one atm machine that ran out of money on you, and most of all, you’ve heard at least someone say “It doesn’t feel like Christmas” or “I don’t feel Christmas yet.”

Happy Holidays people, I’ll see you all after Christmas. Or better yet, next year.

Led Zeppelin reunion

The reunion of all reunions

I just finished watching bootleg videos on YouTube and damn, I’m still having goosebumps. The band of all bands, Led Zeppelin, just held their one night reunion last Monday. John’s son, Jason Bonham, took care of the sticks. It was held at The O2 in London, in aid of the Ahmet Ertegun education fund. The show was originally scheduled last November 1, but I think Jimmy Page suffered a hand injury. It is said that the ticket request site received a billion page impressions (there are only 20,000 tickets) on the night the gig was announced – I remember checking Ahmettribute.com for that too some time last September and it was down.

Man. I love Zeppelin. I have all their records. To see Led Zeppelin live is part of my life’s will-never-happen, sob list. Stairway To Heaven 2007! I’ll end this post with a quote from a high school classmate of mine, one of the biggest Led Zep fans I know. “Man, I wish I was born in the 70’s.

February 27, 2008 update

For complete ticket prices, see very last comment (as of today) below. By the way, I just got word that Up Dharma Down is fronting the gig. Very, very cool.

Second coming

The return of the comeback of Incubus. This time the concert will be held in Araneta Coliseum. March 9, 2008. Mark your calendars. Oh, I really hope to get this search into Google. But seriously though, I love Incubus. I was there last March 12, 2004, row 12 or something. CCP open grounds. I believe I still have bootlegs of that concert, oh I forgot, it’s with the NBI now. Can we expect people who already went the last time to go again? Of course, new album, new songs. Via Berdy Boi (YM), via cherrycoloredfunk’s Multiply site.

I promise to update this post with details, tickets, prices, the works, when they hit me. Or, help a fellow by posting a comment with what you already know. By the way, here are the Asian tour dates: March 5, 2008 – Jakarta, Indonesia (Tennis Indoor Stadium), March 7, 2008 – Singapore (Fort Canning Park), March 9, 2008 – Manila, Philippines (Araneta Coliseum), March 10, 2008 – Hong Kong, China (Star Hall), March 12, 2008 – Beijing, China (Star Live Club), March 13, 2008 – Shanghai, China (Yun Feng Theater).

How to deal with haters

Friday, December 7th, 2007

Haters, haters. Is it safe to say that without haters, there won’t be any lovers? If you publish a site of any kind, a blog perhaps, chances are, you’ve come across haters. These are the people who love spending their time saying otherwise, saying you’re wrong, you’re full of crap, saying you suck. All of these done in the most cowardly fashion ever – hiding their true identity with some codename, some unreachable email. I’ve gone numb to these haters, if not I would’ve already stopped blogging. At first it really gets you, but it’s a fact of life, so you get number every time. Besides, life is a constant stream of contrasting opinions. What bugs me the most is leaving it at that, leaving no room for an intelligent conversation or debate, leaving us, the unknowing target, with no form of remorse.

I am human so I admit that I still am sort of affected by hate comments. After all, a back stab is a back stab. It would be wisest to leave them alone, but something tells me that if I do, I lose. Here’s why. The hater knows for sure that you’ve read the comment, he or she knows you just chose not to publish it because it’s rude and degrading. He knows deep inside that you felt something while reading it, while he walks away unaffected, totally anonymous, having totally toyed with your emotions unscathed. I’ve thought about what I can do with it or him for a while. I’ll expose his I.P. address, I’ll dare him to show himself up to me, I’ll post a major, more lewd comment directed entirely to the hater. All of these, led me to one conclusion. Bastos knows no bastos.

I figured what my upper-hand was. I own the blog, I can edit any way I want, I can manipulate. Bastos knows no bastos. Therefore, bastos becomes banal. Imagine seeing your hate mail published, only now it’s a love mail. Made in your pseudo-name. Now, I’ve established a sort of relationship between me and the hater. He knows his hate will be published, but in a form unfamiliar with the bastos, his black would’ve been turned to white. I’ll make all of you banal, let’s see how you are in your “uncomfort” zone. Click here to see the most recent hate mail I received (already edited). See here how it is now.

My Hadj cue

Wednesday, December 5th, 2007

Hadj cues

A short primer on Hadj cues. Hadj cues, is Hadjimar Baldeviso, a thirty-something cuemaker from Makati, Philippines. I first met Hadj about a year ago. My site, bilyar.NET was fairly new, the World Pool Championship was being held here for the first time, and my billiards addiction was stronger than ever. I’ve been wanting to retire my 10-year old Aragon cue, and figured the timing was perfect.

Before I knew Hadj, I knew little about the Philippine cue-making scene. Little did I know that while I was waiting for my Hadj custom cue, I would have gone to almost every cuemaker within Metro Manila, try their cues, buy some of their cues, sell their cues. Yes, all of that happened while I was waiting for my Hadj cue to be completed. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not complaining.

What I had wanted from Hadj was a simple Efren Reyes inspired cue – plain jane bird’s eye maple with a cocobolo handle. I supplied the bird’s eye. Five years ago I was so into cues that I directly imported the woods which were hard to come by locally. Hadj is very methodical in his craft. See, the difference with Hadj and other local cue brands is that Hadj is actually the one making the cues from start to finish, dealing with the customers, marketing, buying raw materials, etc. I believe this is how American cuemakers do it, other Filipino cue brands on the other hand are usually marketed by a “capitalist,” where sometimes we don’t even get to talk to whoever built the cue. I hate to ruin the cue-making reputation in the Philippines, but some of these capitalists don’t even play pool to begin with.

I realized all of this after I had already given my order to Hadj, and boy was I glad. Hadj has been playing pool all his life. His venture into cuemaking is, to me, like his commitment to his pool passion. He knows every scientific detail there is to cuemaking, the ins and outs, he knows what kind of “hit” he wants his cues to have, and how he can relate to the customer’s needs with a little touch of the “Hadj hit.” When I’m in his shop, we talk pool and cues until the wee hours of the morning.

My cue

A year of waiting did not bother me. Take note, a year is not the usual waiting time for Hadj cues, some unfortunate incidents happened while my cue was being made, and, my wood was being made “stable” in the process. I let him design the ringwork and he came up with a bloodwood-bacote-bloodwood all-natural style that compliments the cue very well. It comes with two shafts, one with a WB tip and one with Elk Master (my request). The ferrule is also only 1/2 of an inch, which I think also contributes to the hit.

The hit. Ah, the heart of this review. For me, the cue did what I hoped it would do – retire my 10-year old playing cue. That is telling a lot. I’ve owned a lot of cues, I’ve always resorted back to my old cue. I always see something wrong with a new cue that I’m trying out. The weight, the balance, the hit, the shaft, the stiffness. I said this to Hadj when he asked for comments – “Bro, I haven’t found anything about the hit that I don’t like.” This is one solid hitting cue. Solid but natural. It feels like, well, wood. There’s a hit that is too stiff, usually one where a steel joint is involved, my cue is not like that. There is a hit that is too soft and whippy, my cue is definitely nothing like that. I’m not that technical in describing how a cue feels, all I can say is that this cue is definitely a keeper and a player.

I walk amongst porn lovers

Monday, December 3rd, 2007

Just recently, I opened another free-to-upload style site that was reminiscent of the infamous BB. Same software, same style, but not pornographic. The site’s not a secret, I’m just not in the mood to divulge my project details today – something to do with a recent encounter with haters. Just look to your right.

Anyway, people were already telling me “Parang alam ko na kung saan patungo bagong project mo ah!” Sorry to disappoint people, I’m not yet ready to create another adult site. Take note, not YET. I opened the gallery for public registrations, and bam! Porn-filled within 3 days. Good thing I was able to moderate asap. Now, I have to approve uploads before they get posted. Is anybody familiar with JayFaves? That’s what I was going for. Just plain old pictures of beautiful babes, nothing lewd, nothing nude. Haay, porn lovers.

NU 107 Rock Awards 2007 winners

Saturday, December 1st, 2007

Nope, I wasn’t there. But let this post serve as an online reference to last night’s event – NU 107’s (107.5 fm) highly-anticipated, yearly tribute to Pinoy rockers – the “Rock Awards.” Held at the World Trade Center, November 30. I was offered V.I.P. passes though, but I had prior commitments. I’ll try to relay some of my cousin’s first-hand experiences from the event.

The Anthem – Francis Brew

This year’s anthem was done by Francis Reyes – The Dawn, Francis Brew of In The Raw. Guitar solo style, ala Hendrix. In the past, the task belonged to, among others – Wally Gonzales and Cooky Chua. And to quote my cousin – “Ok yung Lupang Hinirang ni Brew, kulang lang sa landi. Ginawa lang nya yung notes at binilisan ang timing.”

Best New Artist – Hilera

I like Hilera for this category. Closest competition would be Sino Sikat?, but they (Kat) won something more appropriate later on. The other nominees are Giniling Festival, Hardboiledeggz (Muziklaban), Salamin (Gary V. Jr.), and Wake Up Your Seatmate (all-female, but only 1 true female, band).

Vocalist of the Year – Kat Agarrado

Veteran Kat Agarrado. Has been around the scene for probably almost 10 years now. Former Passage vocalist. No qualms here, Kat rocks. The voice, the looks, the performance. Kind of like a female Bamboo. Other nominees include Bamboo, Miggy Chavez (sikat eh), Steve Badiola (pwede na, Pinoy Dashboard), Ebe Dancel, and Marc Abaya.

Guitarist of the Year – Ira Cruz

Like I’ve always said, I’m still waiting for the day Ira will live up to his hype. I like his playing, don’t get me wrong, but if you’ve heard the stories I’ve heard about his playing, you’d expect more also. Nominees: Mong Alcaraz, Mike Elgar, Boogie Romero, Steve Badiola, Junji Lerma. Except for Steve (no haters please, just not up to par), all are worthy. Especially Junji Lerma, I’m glad he’s in the list.

Bassist of the Year – Nathan Azarcon

Idol in all aspects. I miss guys like Mally Paraguya, Louie Talan, Nino Avenido for this award. Nominees: Carlos Calderon, Japs Sergio, Francis De Veyra, Ivan Garcia. Si Japs saka si Francis magaling.

Drummer of the Year – Vic Mercado, Mark Escueta

What’s with the double winner?

Best Live Act – Bamboo

If you ask me – Jeepney Joyride. Depends on what you really consider for this category. Live act as in “a show,” or as in “tight playing?” Besides, Bamboo has won it all. Nominees: Chicosci, Typecast, Kjwan, Radioactive Sago Project, and Hilera. I’m not comfortable commenting on live acts (show-wise) because, like what my girlfriend said, “Huy! Gumalaw ka naman!

In The Raw Award – Reklamo

Mahusay. Yung si LC (?), beterano na rin. Kind of like a Pinoy Primus. Unique music to the Pinoy scene. Nominees: Subsscapular, Teenage Hero, Kastigo, and Sutil.

Song of the Year – “Will You Ever Learn,” Typecast

No comment. Wait, songs from previous years would’ve creamed this year’s list. Nominees include “Vampire Social Club,” “Tatsulok,” “Sala,” “Turning My Safety Off,” “Sundo” and “DVD X.” No one from Typecast was available to claim the award.

Artist of the Year – Bamboo

Bamboo, super-band. No further comments. Nominees include Chicosci, Typecast, Kjwan, Sugarfree, and Radioactive Sago Project.

Album of the Year – “Moonlane Gardens,” Orange and Lemons

Nominees: “We Stand Alone Together,” “Every Moss and Cobweb,” “Tangina Mo Ang Daming Naguguton Sa Mundo Fashionista Ka Pa Rin,” “Tala-Arawan” and “2StepMarv.” No further comments, your honor.

Best Album Packaging – “Moonlane Gardens,” Orange & Lemons

Done by Sarah Gaugler and Clementine. Nominees: Inksurge.com for “Twilight,” Paolo Lim for “Isang Ugat, Isang Dugo” and Inksurge.com for “Tala-Arawan.” Buti naman hindi nanalo ang Inksurge.com, hindi pinapansin nyan mga inquiries ko eh.

Producer of the Year – Lourd and Francis De Veyra

For “Tangina Mo Ang Dami Nagugutom Sa Mundo Fashionista Ka Pa Rin.” You know what, I hope this album is entirely dedicated to Tim Yap. Nominees include Bamboo and Angee Rozul, Typecast, Robert Javier and Jonathan Ong, Robin Rivera, and Angee Rozul.

Best Music Video – “DVD-X”

By Sandwich, directed by Marie Jamora. Nominees include “Frailty” directed by Pancho Esguerra and Bluerain Media, “Kung Ayaw Mo Na Sa Akin,” “Loveteam” and “Sundo” directed by Marie Jamora, “Probinsyana” directed by Pancho Esguerra, and “Will You Ever Learn” directed by Pedring Lopez.

I therefore conclude… Well, my cousin is kind of hard to please, he said he only enjoyed performances by Sino Sikat?, Razorback and Radioactive Sago Project. He did however, rave about the tons of “rockstar chicks.” I’m pretty sure I would’ve enjoyed (in order of priority) “rockstar chicks” and each performance easily if I were there.
