My AKG K 240 Studio

Thoughts In Binary, AKG K240 Studio

I’m doing this short review because one, I like headphones; two, I’ve already posted a previous headphone review (Audio-Technica ATH-PRO5V), got decent traffic, and sold a link with TLA; and three, these cans rock! I did however bought these 3 months ago, the review has always been in my saved drafts, but only finished it now. This cost me Php 7,900, bought new, and is my most-expensive pair to date. They’re not even considered high-end, mind you.

Build-quality

My very first impression was it looked better on photos. From AKG’s official site particularly, most probably because of the uber-dramatic photos they produced. The cans look nice though, don’t get me wrong, just not as pretty as say Audio-Technica headphones. But that’s just me. Earpads are made of tough leather, the earcups are made of plastic with a gold aluminum outline which made them look classy. The headband is made of leather, then there are two metal bands above them. The headphones adjust automatically on your head via 2 stretchable garters on either side. It seems that they can withstand abuse, otherwise it would be impossible to use the cans if they break. The cord is not too thick, not too thin. The jack is made of plastic and on the other side, a small removable mini-pl plug. Close-up photos available here.

Comfort

These are circumaural, open-design headphones and they fit the bill nicely. The pads touch none of my ears – I have an average-sized ear. Weight is just right, not too light, not too heavy. The clasp is somewhere on the weak side, but it won’t fall from serious head-banging. The open design means no outside noise is blocked, and this pair really blocks almost none. I don’t know if that’s a good thing, but that means you must be in complete solitude to enjoy music and avoid disturbing others.

Sound Quality

Let me just start by saying that I’m not an uber-critical audiophile. I know what I want, I know what sounds good, but I don’t go through as much trouble as knowing the difference in sound between two audio cables. Coming from an Audio-Technica, I found these cans too tinny at the beginning – Audio-Technica’s have exaggerated mids. Plus, they do need a decent amount of burn-in. So, after completing the break-in period, I began to understand all the fuss behind these cans. The AKG K 240 Studio is a particularly popular model by the way, spanning over 30 years of studio and home use all over the world.

The sound is bright and shiny – in a good way. Detail and tonal balance are excellent. You would definitely hear things you haven’t heard before even from really old records. I guess the strength of these cans are it’s highs. Bass is adequate and not weak, mids are a little scooped but ok, and the highs are just phenomenal. These provide a different way of enjoying music from what I’m used to. I could probably listen to music over night without fatigue. You might think bright equals fatigue, which I thought so too, but they are bright in a smooth way. Think shiny white silk. And, since I’m not really into criticizing each frequency range, I’ll just end the sound review with four words: bright, shiny, shimmering, splendid.

Final Thoughts

The AKG K 240 Studio is a good buy for me. It makes me wonder what’s still in store with the higher-end cans such as the almost-double this price AKG K 701. But I honestly don’t think it will double my 240′s performance. Probably a little improvement here and there, but definitely not overtaken badly. These won’t work well with portables like iPods because they need amplification to sound right. They won’t sound bad unamplified though, they just won’t sound the way they were meant to be. Is it worth the Php 7,900 price tag? For me it is. I love listening to music but I still can’t afford high-end home audio equipment. This is my “cheaper” alternative to audiophilism.

January 5, 2009 update

I can’t believe how fast my cans became obsolete. Shortly after posting this, AKG came out with the K 240 MK II, which is supposed to be a “better” version of the Studio, but, what I really have my eyes set on are the K 242 HDs. Lovely.

December 26, 2009 update

The new line of AKG wireless headphones are damn sleek.

PayPal withdrawal through local banks

Monday, January 28th, 2008

January 31, 2008 update

My money finally came through today even if I used the wrong bank code supplied by BPI last Monday. But, it had a deduction of Php 150. My Php 12,571.74 became Php 12,421.74. PayPal states that Php 250 will be charged if wrong bank details are supplied, I wonder why mine was deducted Php 150 only. Puzzler.

January 30, 2008 update

The BPI bank code posted below was given to me by BPI’s customer service last Monday, before Paypal released it’s official bank codes list. I withdrew using the code below. I have not received my money in my BPI account, nor has PayPal returned my money with the said Php 250 deduction fee if banks details are wrong. I will update this post if PayPal will penalize me. The new “official” BPI code is 010040018.

Original post

Philippine-PayPal account holders now have the option to withdraw through local banks, and so the title says. I will credit pinoymoneytalk.com on this, just because they bitched about it, but I did honestly read it first from mukamo.com.

To make this post short and swabe, simply log-in to your PayPal account and go to Withdraw. You will need to enter your bank account number, and your bank’s 9-digit code. Call your bank’s customer service to find out your bank code – it is not the same as the swift code, obviously, because that’s an 8-digit code. BPI account holders, save some time and use this code: 021000021. Withdrawing through local banks is free if you withdraw a minimum of Php 7,000.00. By the way, your account must be a Peso account. I withdrew $300 before this post and they gave me a 1 U.S. Dollar = 40.6800 Peso exchange rate. My PayPal account has already been deducted, even if the promised delivery time is 5-7 business days. Maybe in 5-7 business days I’ll update this post.

Heath Ledger is dead

Wednesday, January 23rd, 2008

Just thought you should know. Australian born actor, Heath Ledger, best known for his Oscar-nominated role as one of two gay cowboys in the 2005 film, Brokeback Mountain, was found dead today in a Manhattan apartment. Detectives are investigating the possibility that he died of a drug overdose.

Police said he had been due to have a massage at the apartment on Broome Street in SoHo. The housekeeper went to tell him the masseuse had arrived and found him dead.

28-year-old Heath Ledger has two pending films – The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus, a Terry Gilliam film, and the next Batman film, The Dark Night, where he plays the Joker. Oh well, so much for Brokeback Mountain 2.

Julia Fordham concert Philippines

Manila and Cebu

Brisith Julia Fordham, the one who gave us such bentang-benta-sa-Pinoy hits like Love Moves In Mysterious Ways and Invisible War, is set to re-visit us this February. Most probably to get the ball rolling for Valentine-junkies. I’m pretty sure she’s been here more than twice already, evident from her releasing a Philippines-only album entitled “Songbook.”

Anyway, just to get this out of the way here are the dates, times and venues: February 8 (Friday), 6:30 p.m. at the Alabang Town Center, February 9 (Saturday), 7:00 p.m. at TriNoma, February 10 (Sunday), 7:00 p.m. at Glorietta, and February 13 (Wednesday), 6:30 p.m. at Ayala Center in Cebu. Since these are Ayala Malls shows, they are free but reservations are required for good seats. Just Google “Ayala Malls” for contact numbers.

Ne-Yo concert Philippines

Monday, January 21st, 2008

I just want to get two more upcoming Manila concerts out of the way to get my work done. Ne-Yo on this post, and later, Julia Fordham. I know they’re not really consistent with my usual musical preference but this blog lives on such posts. First off, Ne-Yo. I do prefer this one over the recently held Akon concert. Ne-Yo (or Neyo?) has some really swabe tunes.

Smooth-ass R&B dude Ne-Yo is staging a one-night concert at the Araneta Coliseum on February 29, 2008. Show starts 8:00 p.m. Tickets are priced at Php 4,569 for Patron VIP, Php 3,570 for regular Patron, Php 3,570 for Lower Box, Php 1,943 for Upper Box A, Php 893 for Upper Box B, and Php 578 for General Admission. Only Upper Box B and General Admission are non-reserved (free seating) tickets.

I believe there are also uber-limited VIP tickets selling for Php 7,500 and 10,000. just don’t quote me on these. Tickets via TicketNet – SM Malls, wwwiticketnet.com.ph, 374-2222 or 374-9999.

Renaldo Lapuz in American Idol

Friday, January 18th, 2008

Crazy Pinoy sings his own composition, “We’re Brothers Forever”

Here’s the latest blow to Filipino ego. Renaldo Lapuz, 44 years old and currently residing in Reno, Nevada, auditioned yesterday for American Idol Season 7. He had the crazy gear, the crazy attitude, the crazy voice, and all the requirements needed to make it to the episode’s list of kabaliwan. But, he did make around 7 minutes of international airtime, and made the judges, especially Simon Cowell, laugh. I’m not here to judge.

See the video in YouTube, and inform me if it has already been taken out. “La, la, la, I am your brother, your best friend forever… We’re brothers till the end of time…” Something like that. Represent!

Journey of Arnel Pineda

Local Arnel Pineda joins the band Journey

I know, I know. This is old news; doesn’t mean I didn’t knew about it back then right? Philmusic.com was first on this, as early as September 4, 2007. In fact back then, it was only a rumor. Now it has been confirmed, and everyone has a blog post about it.

The gist

Arnel Pineda is the vocalist of the local band Zoo. They cover Journey songs. Journey has always been associated with vocalist, Steve Perry. The band has had two more vocalists after Perry left, one by the name of Jeff Scott Soto. When Journey found itself lacking a frontman once again, the searched YouTube (true story) for bands who cover their songs. Zoo has a ton of videos in YouTube, which coincidentally included Journey songs. Impressively, Arnel Pineda sings them with ease. He sings really, really high-pitched songs like there’s no tomorrow – pitch perfect, with ease, and with just about the right emotions. Just check out their cover of Heart’s Alone. He was then invited to the U.S. to audition for Journey. The rest, as they say, is history.

Rockstar, the movie

This is big right? Of course it is. They recently held a press conference at Hard Rock Cafe in Makati. They’re (Journey) set to tour as soon as possible. They will visit Manila most probably in November or December. Arnel needs to work on his diction; that’s a known fact and is recognized by Journey. My uncle, who was a rock legend (in his own right) in the 60′s, 70′s and 80′s, knows Arnel and the rest of Zoo from back in the day in Olongapo. I’ve yet to pull-out more information. Best of luck to Arnel Pineda.

It will be held at the Araneta Coliseum, on a Wednesday, show starts at 8:00 p.m.

My Chemical Romance concert Philippines

Monday, January 7th, 2008

January 26, 2008 update

I only have three important things to say, since people who visit this page most probably went to the concert anyway. The show was great, I do have videos and pictures, but like what one commenter said, there are tons already in YouTube. One and two, General Admission and Bronze tickets which sold for Php 400 and Php 600 respectively, were being sold for Php 85 and Php 300 by Smart people walking outside the venue. Even better is you get a free sim card with a 30-peso load if you get the Php 85 deal and a 300-peso load card if you get the Php 300 deal. I wish you didn’t buy tickets so soon or from the gates. Third and lastly, why in hell did they not perform Ghost of You?

January 25, 2008

A little late posting about this concert. Oh by the way, Maroon 5 is also coming over this March. More on that on a later post. My Chemical Romance, known for the songs “Helena,” “I’m Not Okay (I Promise),” “The Ghost Of You,” “Welcome To The Black Parade,” “I Don’t Love You,” among others, is set to rock Manila on January 25, 2008. It will be held at the Fort Bonifacio Open Field, Taguig.

Ticket prices start at Php 412.00 for General Admission, Php 2,575.00 for the Silver Section, and Php 3,862.00 for the Gold Section. Only three sections for a huge, huge venue. People at General Admission, expect to watch the concert at the screens.

The gig is being promoted by Viva Concerts and tickets are sold by TicketWorld – the one in National Bookstores. Viva Concerts – 687-6181, Ticketworld – 891-9999; www.ticketworld.com.ph.

See you at the General Admission, unless I get a freebie. Anyway, great concerts to start the year. I hope the trend continues till the end of the year.

Nothing much to say

Happy 2008

I just feel the need to update this blog and post something with a 2008 timestamp. Anyway, it’s not that I’m not working, or “online,” it’s just that I really, really want to break away from my regular online income and double or triple it as soon as possible. Something about holiday inumans, hanging out with same-aged buddies, and the always-true there’s always a relative more successful than me analogy.

Unfortunately, this blog is not making me (that much) money. And, it takes a lot of time to post, to think, to correct. I just can’t post away 2-3 times a day like the others. I enjoy long posts, I enjoy writing about things that obviously don’t make it to the search engines. This blog will still be that, but currently it’s not high on my priority list. I have some “secret” projects. Nothing pinoy-related really, nothing adult. Ok, to give you an idea I’ve spent the whole previous month or two learning about PPC (pay-per-click) and affiliate marketing. I guess I can say I know SEO (search engine optimization) quite well, but it won’t float my boat forever.

Happy new year everyone. 2007 went by so fast, it felt like nothing happened. But the other day I was finally able to reminisce and 2007 ranked high in my life in terms of “years with most action.” I find it silly how we need to open a new page (or better yet, a new notebook) in the diary of our lives just because time says so. It was just 3 days ago people. What you were last year, you still are now, what you aspired to achieve “next year” is now. Nothing really magical happened when the clock struck 12. See you in future posts.
