Time for another AVG Free update

AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition 8.0

Now that AVG is the most popular Anti-Virus, and I assume that you use nothing else, it’s time for another version upgrade. See, AVG is notorious for making it seem that they are discontinuing their free edition anti-virus for users every time they release a new version. Thing is, free-version users need only to wait for the last couple of days prior to expiration before they release the official download links for the free version. AVG Anti-Virus 7.5 is expiring tomorrow – meaning they will stop giving regular virus database updates and software updates for version 7.5 users.

Now they have the links for the free version exposed and obvious in their website. Simple go here, click on Continue to AVG Free download, click again on Continue to AVG Free download, then click on Download AVG Free 8.0. But wait, let me save you some time by saying I encountered some problems downloading the installer from Download.com – I reinstalled using the the downloaded installer from AVG’s server. I have no explanation for this whatsoever except that the file sizes from the two servers are off by a hundred bytes or so. So there you go, just install the new version and it will take care of all the “upgrading.”

To launch a series of partnerships

Diversification

Just a tad too much sites to handle. Apart from not running out of it, I’ve also had good ones that enjoyed some hay in their day. I’m talking about ideas here, and these, for me, become websites. I’m getting tired of saying “Hey, I thought of that too!” or “If I had just finished what I started…” So now, like all great business owners, I will put to good use the talents of others and reap all the benefits. Just kidding.

The select few (sites) which really have potential will be split in a no-holds-barred 50-50 between me and my partner. Revenue, expenses, work load, everything. In this way, I would have “technically” brought down the number of sites I manage by half, and add 100% more brain.

First to go is bilyar.NET. Did you know that I had owned that domain since college? It’s tough to promote a billiards site without touching base with pool halls, tournaments, events, etc., or offline activities. Glad to say I have found someone already, a well-connected and very much active pinoy pool aficionado whom I also met online.

Next is a spin-off of my music-related sites. Now, instead of continuing some of the already-live sites like Rockstar Bembang!, me and my partner decided to create a brand new idea for branding purposes. She, yes she, unlike he in bilyar.NET, is also very much active in the local music scene as well as online.

All I can say for now is that I’m very excited and I will further discuss the details here in a one post per site manner in the future, once everything has been set in order. I will also probably advertise my need for more partners here, for some of the other sites I’ll continue – mostly local. Remember, to begin with, all hosting costs and domain registration costs are already accounted for. Care to venture with me?

Agent Sarah Walker from Chuck

Played by Yvonne Strahovski

And also because I have to make two consecutive posts related. Yes, here we go again with the ladies, but this time I’m really in deep. And just because, I separated her into two posts – Yvonne Strzechowski, screen-named Yvonne Strahovski, is that lovely Polish-Australian actress who plays Agent Sarah Walker in the TV Series, Chuck. Have I said she is lovely? So people, do yourself a favor and watch Chuck. Season 1 just finished in the U.S. and I’m already seeing it on local cable channels. She just has this unexplainable charm that goes with her character and is aided by her acting. Be sure to take note of her Wienerlicious outfit; and oh, her Princess Leia-costumed Halloween scene from episode 6.

The theme song from Chuck

Also, “Chuck theme song”

Now this is one cool theme song. It is the one with the cool guitar riff in the intro-credits of the show. That song is entitled “Short Skirt/Long Jacket” and was done by the band Cake. Remember Cake? Them who sang I Will Survive from the circa 1996 album Fashion Nugget? Anyway, “Short Skirt/Long Jacket” came from the 2001-released album Comfort Eagle.

You can download the song or the whole album in Napster. It’s free if you get the free trial membership.

Adding SMF to Coppermine

Bridging; Coppermine comes first, retaining already-registered users.

Here’s one for the webmasters. I recently found myself in a pickle when in one of my sites, I wanted to add a forum to an already-active gallery with registered users. I had installed Coppermine for my gallery simply because it’s what I’ve been using for years now and I like it’s capabilities and flexibility. Coppermine has a built-in bridge manager which allows you to share the users database with that of your forum’s. Normally this would have worked if I had my forum set-up before the gallery, or created them at the same time. When you use the Coppermine bridge manager on an already-active gallery, you adapt the users database of the forum, so the relationships will be lost.

The actual files, user-galleries and database records of your Coppermine installation will not be deleted, but unless your users from the forum and your users from the gallery share the same unique user id, you will have mixed-up user galleries belonging to other users. This is explained very well in Coppermine’s documentation. Assuming you understand how database relationships work and therefore are still with me, let’s now proceed to the next obvious step.

We now know that we need to import the users from Coppermine to your forum software – SMF in this article – and we need to retain their original user’s id. For example – If user admin has a user_id of 1, user star69 has a user_id of 2, we need to retain that in the forum database. There are a couple of ways to do this, and from here it depends on how much database wizardry you know. But, I encountered a problem importing the user passwords to SMF because Coppermine and SMF do not use the same password hash. Coppermine uses MD5 hashing and SMF uses “salted” SHA1 password-hashing. It would have been easy if MD5 could be converted to plain text, but the hash works one-way, and it would take weeks to crack one MD5 hash using brute force.

We now need to find a forum which the same password hashing (MD5) with Coppermine – PhpBB. You can copy and paste the encrypted passwords from Coppermine, add them to PhpBB and let users log-in with the same passwords – all this without exposing the “real” passwords to administrators. Once you have a PhpBB database that has similar users to Coppermine, you now do a fresh install of SMF on a different folder. You then use SMF’s converter for PhpBB which makes it 1-click easy to convert your PhpBB-powered forum to SMF. After that, just use Coppermine’s bridge manager normally.

Really, the only semi-difficult hurdle here is importing your Coppermine database to PhpBB, especially because they don’t share the same (although they are similar) fields. So to make things easier, I created a script that prints (displays) an SQL-written command which import your Coppermine users to PhpBB, and it will retain such fields as user’s email, user’s location, language, apart from their ids, usernames and passwords. You can view the script here. Just copy the content, add your database details (commented in the code), save it to anyfilename.php, upload it to your server, access yoursite.com/anyfilename.php and it will output an SQL code. Copy this SQL code to your phpbb_users’ table – make sure to empty the table first. All of this can be done in PhpMyAdmin if you’re using cPanel. If you have questions, just post a comment here.

See it in action – the Bebot, Bebot! Forum

I did all of this in my site Bebot, Bebot! It’s a babe blog/forum/gallery, but it clearly shows how SMF and Coppermine work together. Clicking “Register” or “Login” from the gallery will direct you to SMF’s login or register page – which is great by the way, because Coppemine is more prone to spambots. By the way, this is also an infomercial for my un-updated babe blog – Bebot, Bebot!

Mandaluyong Mayor’s Cup

Billiards tournament

Antonio Gabica wins, Marlon Manalo, a Mandaluyong native, places second. $10,000 of the $30,000 prize money goes to Gabica after finishing the 10-ball match with a very convincing 13-8 score. Apart from Gabica and Manalo, other big names who participated in the tournament include Jeffrey de Luna, Leonardo Andam, Leonardo Didal, and of course the foreigners – Johnny Archer, Thorsten Hohmann and Satoshi Kawabata. The tournament was organized by Raya Sports and BSCP in cooperation with Mandaluyong Mayor Benhur Abalos.

About the tournament, etc.

I proceeded directly to Mandaluyong after enjoying an early afternoon of knockout stages in Starmall, Alabang on May 8. Like I said in my previous post, the set-up of the Mandaluyong Mayor’s Cup is nothing compared to the Manny Villar Cup. Mandaluyong City Hall is a one-of-a-kind city hall. The place is well lit and ventilated (cool), and organizers seem well-prepared, with big-sreen (projector) scoreboards and audience etiquette banners. It is said that this tournament has been planned months ago and the other, just 2 weeks prior. Mandaluyong Mayor’s Cup however, got better nationwide coverage with Studio 23, compared to Manny Villar Cup’s Solar Sports. If not for Manny Villar Cup’s player-hoarding, this tournament would have been perfect.

Billiards Tournament, 1st Senate President Manny Villar Cup

Warren Kiamco wins, Efren Reyes places second – with a finals score of 11-7. After that of course, they held the so-called “dream match” between Efren Reyes and Ronnie Alcano – a race to 4 exhibition match of rotation. Ronnie Alcano wins 4-1. Because of that, Efren lost twice in a row in one night, but, it’s good to see Efren back in top form. He played great during the knockout stages, impressing the crowd with magician-like prowess. I have some videos and pictures.

About the tournament, etc.

The tournament was held at Starmall (a.k.a. Metropolis) in Alabang, in their “sports section” – old movie houses turned indoor basketball courts. The place was hot as there was no air conditioning, except for a bunch of industrial air circulators. The floor was covered with tarpaulin-like flooring which was loose. Scoreboards were basically useless, some were even facing away from the crowd. The tournament obviously lacked preparation; I went straight to the Mandaluyong Mayor’s Cup and felt like entering a 5-star hotel after checking out from a cheap bed & breakfast. There are two major tournaments being held simultaneously, because politics has blackened the world of Philippine Billiards. However, Manny Villar Cup wins in professional player-support, granted they sided with this tournament in their own free will; and Maureen Larazabal singing the anthem in the finals is definitely a plus.

The best Toyota Vios review ever

Tuesday, May 6th, 2008

So, my mom bought a new car – a very practical one; a 2008 Toyota Vios, G model. “G” is Toyota’s way of saying the car is in the top of it’s class – all the amenities, mag wheels, higher displacement engine, the works. Only thing we didn’t get is the insane 40+ thousand upgrade for leather seats. Ours is an automatic with a 1.5L engine, so basically, it’s the 2nd most expensive Vios (Php 765,000.00) around.

In this review, I will not bore you with numbers and 0-100 km/h statistics. I took pictures of the car from all angles, and added captions and commentaries for each picture. I took into account the average small and young family looking for a daily driver for “pops” and a weekend ride for mom, pops, and the yet-to-go-to-school bulinggits. In my opinion, the Toyota Vios does not serve any purpose better than this.

Of course, there are choices. Basically, the Vios is a level lower than compact cars. Compact means Honda Civic, Toyota Altis, Nissan Sentra. Of course, in the Philippines, smaller is better – easier to maneuver through traffic and parking spaces, and better gas consumption – which reminds me to include here the 15 km/l it gets on average. 15 km/l – that’s nearly twice what we used to get from the 90’s Civics, Corollas, etc., and a Php 50 costing trip from Alabang-Nichols. Technology is getting better in producing more kilometers per liter, but gas prices are getting higher. Ergo, everything stays the same.

Back to the choices. The only other sub-compact in my list is the Honda City. Of course there is the Honda Jazz, but it became more of a “porma” car than a family car. The Honda City has a 1.3 engine. In Toyota’s defense, a 1.3 liter engine consumes more gas because it’s hirap. I say, Honda has VTEC and other advanced engine technologies so basically they consume the same amount of gas and produce nearly equivalent power outputs. Brands-wise they’re both Japanese. But to put it in a more apt perspective, a Toyota will surpass at least twice it’s life expectancy and a Honda, is well, a Honda.

This is slowly becoming the most boring Toyota Vios review ever, so let’s proceed to the more exciting life in color. Click on the picture below to view the review and do share your knowledge and opinions about sub-compacts for comparison.

Thursday live in the Philippines

Confirmed

Great, great stuff. Thursday, the band, responsible for that very moving and powerful song “Understanding In A Car Crash,” is coming over. Just a small event though, but for two nights. First on May 30, 2008 at A-Venue in Makati – tickets priced at Php 1,000 but not yet selling. Then the second night on May 31, 2008 in Camarines Sur. Yup, Camarines Sur – for the 2008 Kaogma Festival, which is of course free. There will also be performances by Chicosci, Typecast, Angulo and April Morning Skies. The whole shindig is brought to us by PULP.

Of course Thursday, for me, is reason enough to be stoked, but when I heard about the Cam Sur gig, I couldn’t believe how the timing could get this perfect. I’ve been itching to go to Cam Sur and always knew it would be my “huling hirit” for this summer. Now I have a reason, and an excuse. Perfect. Thanks to chubby cheeks for the Typecast-friendster commenced rumor, and to teenayski for confirming it via Facebook.
