SM Mall of Asia is small

Facts & Information

Located in Bay City, Pasay City, it is the largest mall in the Philippines covering 19.5 hectares of land and 386,224 square meters of floor area. It was opened on May 21, 2006, inaugurated by none other than Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo, madam president. Owned and operated under the management of Henry Sy, a Chinese-Filipino business tycoon, it was built on reclaimed land and is located at the southmost tip of the Philippines’ most popular road – Epifanio de los Santos Avenue (EDSA). SM Mall of Asia also built the first olympic sized skating rink, and the first IMAX cinema in the Philippines.

Thoughts In Binary

The couple of times I’ve been in SM Mall of Asia, I always marveled at it’s size from outside and felt “that’s it?” once I covered all corners of the mall from inside. I have always said “Festival Mall is bigger,“ after a day’s worth of malling. Call it a poor sense of estimation but it’s most probably becuase it only has two floors, and was designed in such a way that the shops and the separate portions are so far apart from each other. It is the BIGGEST mall in the Philippines, but it’s place as one of the largest malls in the world is confusing. There are claims of it being the 3rd, the 6th and the 7th largest mall in world; personally, I don’t mind because no mall in the world can contain all the shops that can cover all my needs. However, what I love about this mall is it appeals to all from the filthy-rich to the filthy-poor. It’s definitely not an Ayala mall – one that is reserved for the brand-name adherents. Plus, it can accomodate all of them and then some.
