I was over at SM Mall of Asia yesterday and I passed by the Smart myTV promotion booth. I have always been intrigued by this myTV thing; I hear stories of people watching television from their phones in Japan. Also, I always find myself in situations where I think this – “Man, I sure could use a television now.” Usually that happens when I’m waiting in my car, waiting in a lounge of some place, or waiting in a waiting area. If you have a girlfriend, you’d understand why I constantly find myself waiting.
Naturally, an invention like Smart myTV would interest me. I went over to the booth and checked the small N92 held by the promo girl. That’s right, even before I checked the promo girl herself, who by the way was hot. It was showing cartoons from the Cartoon Network. First thought that came to my mind was wow, a cable channel. I always thought tv-phones would get reception the same way regular tv sets do. Obviously, I was wrong.
To get Smart myTV you’d need a myTV capable handset. These are: Nokia N92, Nokia N77 and the Samsung P930. These are what they call Digital Video Broadcast – Handheld (DVBH) cellphones. Smart myTV is a service from a company called 360media; I don’t know much about them. Current coverage includes Metro Manila, including NLEX & SLEX – so you can watch in your car, Tagaytay, Cebu and Davao. There are currently 9 channels and these are: Cartoon Network, Entertainment Central (etc), Jack TV, Pinoy Box Office, MTV, CNN, National Geographic Channel, The History Channel and a Sports Channel which includes shows from Basketball TV, Solar Sports and the PBA. Subscription is Php 488 per 30 days and is available for postpaid and prepaid subscribers.
Let me end this post with an irony. I’m a Globe user. I might never have first hand experience with myTV. Please post a comment if you have stories. I know Globe will have a similar service, I’ll post about that too – with first hand experience.
