Renaldo Lapuz in American Idol

Crazy Pinoy sings his own composition, “We’re Brothers Forever”

Here’s the latest blow to Filipino ego. Renaldo Lapuz, 44 years old and currently residing in Reno, Nevada, auditioned yesterday for American Idol Season 7. He had the crazy gear, the crazy attitude, the crazy voice, and all the requirements needed to make it to the episode’s list of kabaliwan. But, he did make around 7 minutes of international airtime, and made the judges, especially Simon Cowell, laugh. I’m not here to judge.

See the video in YouTube, and inform me if it has already been taken out. “La, la, la, I am your brother, your best friend forever… We’re brothers till the end of time…” Something like that. Represent!

Journey of Arnel Pineda

Local Arnel Pineda joins the band Journey

I know, I know. This is old news; doesn’t mean I didn’t knew about it back then right? Philmusic.com was first on this, as early as September 4, 2007. In fact back then, it was only a rumor. Now it has been confirmed, and everyone has a blog post about it.

The gist

Arnel Pineda is the vocalist of the local band Zoo. They cover Journey songs. Journey has always been associated with vocalist, Steve Perry. The band has had two more vocalists after Perry left, one by the name of Jeff Scott Soto. When Journey found itself lacking a frontman once again, the searched YouTube (true story) for bands who cover their songs. Zoo has a ton of videos in YouTube, which coincidentally included Journey songs. Impressively, Arnel Pineda sings them with ease. He sings really, really high-pitched songs like there’s no tomorrow – pitch perfect, with ease, and with just about the right emotions. Just check out their cover of Heart’s Alone. He was then invited to the U.S. to audition for Journey. The rest, as they say, is history.

Rockstar, the movie

This is big right? Of course it is. They recently held a press conference at Hard Rock Cafe in Makati. They’re (Journey) set to tour as soon as possible. They will visit Manila most probably in November or December. Arnel needs to work on his diction; that’s a known fact and is recognized by Journey. My uncle, who was a rock legend (in his own right) in the 60’s, 70’s and 80’s, knows Arnel and the rest of Zoo from back in the day in Olongapo. I’ve yet to pull-out more information. Best of luck to Arnel Pineda.

March 5, 2008

Just some information on the upcoming Maroon 5 concert this March. It will be held at the Araneta Coliseum, on a Wednesday, show starts at 8:00 p.m.

Tickets will be carried by TicketNet – the one at SM malls, www.ticketnet.com.ph, and can be reached at 911-5555. For now seating and ticket prices are still on a “tba” status. Will update this blog post as soon as information comes in.

My Chemical Romance concert Philippines

January 26, 2008 update

I only have three important things to say, since people who visit this page most probably went to the concert anyway. The show was great, I do have videos and pictures, but like what one commenter said, there are tons already in YouTube. One and two, General Admission and Bronze tickets which sold for Php 400 and Php 600 respectively, were being sold for Php 85 and Php 300 by Smart people walking outside the venue. Even better is you get a free sim card with a 30-peso load if you get the Php 85 deal and a 300-peso load card if you get the Php 300 deal. I wish you didn’t buy tickets so soon or from the gates. Third and lastly, why in hell did they not perform Ghost of You?

January 25, 2008

A little late posting about this concert. Oh by the way, Maroon 5 is also coming over this March. More on that on a later post. My Chemical Romance, known for the songs “Helena,” “I’m Not Okay (I Promise),” “The Ghost Of You,” “Welcome To The Black Parade,” “I Don’t Love You,” among others, is set to rock Manila on January 25, 2008. It will be held at the Fort Bonifacio Open Field, Taguig.

Ticket prices start at Php 412.00 for General Admission, Php 2,575.00 for the Silver Section, and Php 3,862.00 for the Gold Section. Only three sections for a huge, huge venue. People at General Admission, expect to watch the concert at the screens.

The gig is being promoted by Viva Concerts and tickets are sold by TicketWorld – the one in National Bookstores. Viva Concerts – 687-6181, Ticketworld – 891-9999; www.ticketworld.com.ph.

See you at the General Admission, unless I get a freebie. Anyway, great concerts to start the year. I hope the trend continues till the end of the year.

Led Zeppelin reunion

The reunion of all reunions

I just finished watching bootleg videos on YouTube and damn, I’m still having goosebumps. The band of all bands, Led Zeppelin, just held their one night reunion last Monday. John’s son, Jason Bonham, took care of the sticks. It was held at The O2 in London, in aid of the Ahmet Ertegun education fund. The show was originally scheduled last November 1, but I think Jimmy Page suffered a hand injury. It is said that the ticket request site received a billion page impressions (there are only 20,000 tickets) on the night the gig was announced – I remember checking Ahmettribute.com for that too some time last September and it was down.

Man. I love Zeppelin. I have all their records. To see Led Zeppelin live is part of my life’s will-never-happen, sob list. Stairway To Heaven 2007! I’ll end this post with a quote from a high school classmate of mine, one of the biggest Led Zep fans I know. “Man, I wish I was born in the 70’s.

Incubus returns to Manila, Philippines

February 27, 2008 update

For complete ticket prices, see very last comment (as of today) below. By the way, I just got word that Up Dharma Down is fronting the gig. Very, very cool.

Second coming

The return of the comeback of Incubus. This time the concert will be held in Araneta Coliseum. March 9, 2008. Mark your calendars. Oh, I really hope to get this search into Google. But seriously though, I love Incubus. I was there last March 12, 2004, row 12 or something. CCP open grounds. I believe I still have bootlegs of that concert, oh I forgot, it’s with the NBI now. Can we expect people who already went the last time to go again? Of course, new album, new songs. Via Berdy Boi (YM), via cherrycoloredfunk’s Multiply site.

I promise to update this post with details, tickets, prices, the works, when they hit me. Or, help a fellow by posting a comment with what you already know. By the way, here are the Asian tour dates: March 5, 2008 – Jakarta, Indonesia (Tennis Indoor Stadium), March 7, 2008 – Singapore (Fort Canning Park), March 9, 2008 – Manila, Philippines (Araneta Coliseum), March 10, 2008 – Hong Kong, China (Star Hall), March 12, 2008 – Beijing, China (Star Live Club), March 13, 2008 – Shanghai, China (Yun Feng Theater).

NU 107 Rock Awards 2007 winners

Nope, I wasn’t there. But let this post serve as an online reference to last night’s event – NU 107’s (107.5 fm) highly-anticipated, yearly tribute to Pinoy rockers – the “Rock Awards.” Held at the World Trade Center, November 30. I was offered V.I.P. passes though, but I had prior commitments. I’ll try to relay some of my cousin’s first-hand experiences from the event.

The Anthem – Francis Brew

This year’s anthem was done by Francis Reyes – The Dawn, Francis Brew of In The Raw. Guitar solo style, ala Hendrix. In the past, the task belonged to, among others – Wally Gonzales and Cooky Chua. And to quote my cousin – “Ok yung Lupang Hinirang ni Brew, kulang lang sa landi. Ginawa lang nya yung notes at binilisan ang timing.”

Best New Artist – Hilera

I like Hilera for this category. Closest competition would be Sino Sikat?, but they (Kat) won something more appropriate later on. The other nominees are Giniling Festival, Hardboiledeggz (Muziklaban), Salamin (Gary V. Jr.), and Wake Up Your Seatmate (all-female, but only 1 true female, band).

Vocalist of the Year – Kat Agarrado

Veteran Kat Agarrado. Has been around the scene for probably almost 10 years now. Former Passage vocalist. No qualms here, Kat rocks. The voice, the looks, the performance. Kind of like a female Bamboo. Other nominees include Bamboo, Miggy Chavez (sikat eh), Steve Badiola (pwede na, Pinoy Dashboard), Ebe Dancel, and Marc Abaya.

Guitarist of the Year – Ira Cruz

Like I’ve always said, I’m still waiting for the day Ira will live up to his hype. I like his playing, don’t get me wrong, but if you’ve heard the stories I’ve heard about his playing, you’d expect more also. Nominees: Mong Alcaraz, Mike Elgar, Boogie Romero, Steve Badiola, Junji Lerma. Except for Steve (no haters please, just not up to par), all are worthy. Especially Junji Lerma, I’m glad he’s in the list.

Bassist of the Year – Nathan Azarcon

Idol in all aspects. I miss guys like Mally Paraguya, Louie Talan, Nino Avenido for this award. Nominees: Carlos Calderon, Japs Sergio, Francis De Veyra, Ivan Garcia. Si Japs saka si Francis magaling.

Drummer of the Year – Vic Mercado, Mark Escueta

What’s with the double winner?

Best Live Act – Bamboo

If you ask me – Jeepney Joyride. Depends on what you really consider for this category. Live act as in “a show,” or as in “tight playing?” Besides, Bamboo has won it all. Nominees: Chicosci, Typecast, Kjwan, Radioactive Sago Project, and Hilera. I’m not comfortable commenting on live acts (show-wise) because, like what my girlfriend said, “Huy! Gumalaw ka naman!

In The Raw Award – Reklamo

Mahusay. Yung si LC (?), beterano na rin. Kind of like a Pinoy Primus. Unique music to the Pinoy scene. Nominees: Subsscapular, Teenage Hero, Kastigo, and Sutil.

Song of the Year – “Will You Ever Learn,” Typecast

No comment. Wait, songs from previous years would’ve creamed this year’s list. Nominees include “Vampire Social Club,” “Tatsulok,” “Sala,” “Turning My Safety Off,” “Sundo” and “DVD X.” No one from Typecast was available to claim the award.

Artist of the Year – Bamboo

Bamboo, super-band. No further comments. Nominees include Chicosci, Typecast, Kjwan, Sugarfree, and Radioactive Sago Project.

Album of the Year – “Moonlane Gardens,” Orange and Lemons

Nominees: “We Stand Alone Together,” “Every Moss and Cobweb,” “Tangina Mo Ang Daming Naguguton Sa Mundo Fashionista Ka Pa Rin,” “Tala-Arawan” and “2StepMarv.” No further comments, your honor.

Best Album Packaging – “Moonlane Gardens,” Orange & Lemons

Done by Sarah Gaugler and Clementine. Nominees: Inksurge.com for “Twilight,” Paolo Lim for “Isang Ugat, Isang Dugo” and Inksurge.com for “Tala-Arawan.” Buti naman hindi nanalo ang Inksurge.com, hindi pinapansin nyan mga inquiries ko eh.

Producer of the Year – Lourd and Francis De Veyra

For “Tangina Mo Ang Dami Nagugutom Sa Mundo Fashionista Ka Pa Rin.” You know what, I hope this album is entirely dedicated to Tim Yap. Nominees include Bamboo and Angee Rozul, Typecast, Robert Javier and Jonathan Ong, Robin Rivera, and Angee Rozul.

Best Music Video – “DVD-X”

By Sandwich, directed by Marie Jamora. Nominees include “Frailty” directed by Pancho Esguerra and Bluerain Media, “Kung Ayaw Mo Na Sa Akin,” “Loveteam” and “Sundo” directed by Marie Jamora, “Probinsyana” directed by Pancho Esguerra, and “Will You Ever Learn” directed by Pedring Lopez.

I therefore conclude… Well, my cousin is kind of hard to please, he said he only enjoyed performances by Sino Sikat?, Razorback and Radioactive Sago Project. He did however, rave about the tons of “rockstar chicks.” I’m pretty sure I would’ve enjoyed (in order of priority) “rockstar chicks” and each performance easily if I were there.

Gayuma wins 2007 Red Horse Muziklaban

Gayuma, the band

The grand finals was held yesterday at the Marikina Sports Complex. Ok, I wasn’t there, and I don’t know anything about the band. But before you go, let me say that this blog has been successful in attracting attention and noise for the soon-to-be-known – just look at what we’ve done to Ellen Adarna. In fact, I did this post for the sole purpose of gathering information about the band. I’m curious as to where Red Horse Muziklaban’s direction as a mainstay “career-maker” goes.

So far, these are what I think holds true for the band and the event. Gayuma hails from Batangas. Gayuma is female-fronted (not sure). Mental Floss (band) was favored to win. The grand prize is Php 900,000 (mutherfunker!). Winners had text-votes influence. Another finalist named “Dog Fight” represented Butuan City, Mindanao. Fans did not like this year’s venue. No one died of stampede this year.

Apologies. Gayuma is not female-fronted. See band line-up from the comment by anonymous. Still haven’t heard their music. Can someone please lead me to possible samples online?

Beyonce Philippines concert

Major bootylicious babe, Beyonce Knowles, is set to visit the Philippines. This is one major concert indeed. The concert is on November 7, 2007 at the The Fort Open Field in Bonifacio City, Taguig. Show starts 7:00 p.m. and tickets are priced at Php 5,665 and Php 618, with a 20% discount for senior citizens. Tickets are handled by TicketWorld and the major sponsors are MTV Philippines, Globe, and of course, Samsung. Tickets will start selling on October 12, 2007.

This concert is part of her Beyonce Experience World Tour, which started last April. November is the Asian and final leg; it includes 8 Asian countries and prior to Manila, she’ll be coming from Shanghai, China on the 5th before going proceeding to Seoul, South Korea on th 9th.

Only two types of tickets sold. Interesting. I have been to some concerts held in The Fort. That is one hellish large venue, and it poses a number of problems. If you plan to watch from the Php 618 are, and are a major Beyonce fan, forget about it. You wont see a thing. You’ll end up watching from the big screens. You’ll be so far off from the stage that you’ll already be hearing delayed sound. For me and the others who have nothing else to do (hence, watch), it’s still worth saying someday that you’ve watched one of the biggest stars of the 21st century.

Josh Groban live in Manila

Philippines, October 17 & 18 PICC Plenary Hall

3rd of 3 concerts this October, but wait, I just heard John Ford Coley is also coming to town. Josh Groban starts 8:00 p.m. but the show on the 17th is a special “invitational,” so tickets for the public are limited. Now get ready for the ticket prices – Php 25,000 (limited), Php 20,000, Php 15,000, Php 10,000, Php 5,000 and Php 3,000 (limited) plus 3% service charge.

The show is a Smart Infinity event so there are some privileges for subscribers. Ticketworld is handling this one, you can contact them at 891-9999. Seriously, this one I might watch. Hey man, I’ve watched the likes of Michael Buble and Yanni over at the PICC – for free though. So then again, maybe I’ll just use the money to buy an iPod.
